“The annual Mauritz Hansen Rugby week is hosted by the Hoérskool Hans Strijdom in Naboomspruit, Limpopo Province, Republic of South Africa.
The first Mauritz Hansen Rugby week was held in 1993 with eight 1 st and eight under 16 teams taking part in the tournament. This year (2016) marked the 24th consecutive year of this prestige tournament.
The “Hansieweek” as it is more lovingly named, has grown to be the largest schools rugby week tournament in the world.
In 2012 it has grown to accommodate 92 teams. Restrictions were put in place in order to make the rugby week more exclusive and only 80 teams took part in the 2013 tournament.
This year, the 80 teams consisted of :- sixteen 1st teams, ten 2 nd teams , twenty under 16 teams, eighteen under 15 teams and sixteen under 14 teams which took part in the tournament.
Schools which take part in the “Hansieweek” are from all over South Africa. We had guest teams, playing on our fields against teams from these schools, like teams from Australia and Namibia.
There are quite a few Springbok rugby players who can remember playing in the “Hansieweek” during their school rugby days. To name a few are the well known Joost van der Westhuizen and the extremely talented Victor Matfield.
In 2015 the first touring team were nominated from the players of the participating 1 st teams. The first touring team visited Ireland and they played very well during the tour. The touring team selected for the 2016 tour to Italy is made up of players selected from the sixteen ‘1st teams who participated in the 2016 Mauritz Hansen Rugby week. “
